Howard County had 1,100 men enlisted in the Civil War and lost 221 – 54 died during battle or of wounds, 4 died while prisoner of war, 2 died at sea, 161 died of disease. One of those who never made it home was the son of Howard County and Kokomo's founding father, David Foster. Men from the county fought in every major battle of the Civil War: Shiloh, Gettysburg, Antietam, just to name a few. Some were involved in the earliest engagements, others were involved in the last engagements of the war. One man attained the rank of Brigadier General; another was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. The contributions of these men to the preservation of the nation should not be forgotten.
